I hope you enjoyed reading about our wedding day and the journey we took to get there. And I really hope it helps anyone planning their wedding day to see how it all pans out on the day - the tears, tantrums, hardwork, planning and anticipation is all worth it! Our day was everything we wanted it to be. It was a combination of both of us and represented us and our relationship perfectly. Everyone had so much fun and I'm so glad we decided to get married in Greece. I would do it all again in the same place and I wouldn't change a thing.

We got married on day 4 of our two-weeks in Greece. We started the celebrations with a party for all our family and friends (all 70 of them!) at a pool side bar in Tsilivi where we were staying. And after the wedding we met up on the beach, for dinner, lunch, drinks and trips throughout the two weeks we were there and spread the celebrations throughout the entire holiday. We had the wedding of our dreams and we're so grateful that so many of our nearest and dearest were there to celebrate with us. It's formed even closer bonds with some and it's made me realise how lucky I am to have such a fantastic group of friends, as well as highlighting how amazing my Mum and Dad are. We have some amazing memories that we will cherish forever.

So, that's my Mission Complete. I now have a new mission - Mission2Mum! Yup, that's right, for those that don't know I'm expecting a baby in March 2012 and that means a whole new mission! So I'm going to wish you all lots of love, luck and best wishes for your wedding planning journey and beyond. I hope to blog once again about weddings, but for now I'll leave you with a few of the final pics from our day. xx

My Heros - a personal thank you

I have always had a close relationship with my parents. And that relationship has only grown stronger whilst planning out wedding.

They have been together since they were 16 and have been married for over 30 years. I have always looked up to them and learnt so much from them. The top priority for any man that I would spend the rest of my life with is that he got on with my parents and my brother. Lucky for me my new husband definitely ticks that box - he and Dad go fishing together most weekends so I guess you could say they get on quite well!

I want to take this opportunity to thank my Mum and Dad for everything. For putting up with me whilst I was growing up, being patient while I worked out who I was and what I wanted to do, always helping me through all that life has thrown at me and for showing me the right way to live my life. If our marriage is half as happy as theirs then we're in for one hell of a life together.

If it wasn't for my Mum and Dad we wouldn't have had the wedding day of our dreams. They helped us financially and supported us throughout the process and I can never thank them enough or repay the things they have done for me, and for us.

Thank you Mum and Dad, my heros, my inspiration, my heart, my best friends. I love you both more than words could ever describe. xx

The Story of our Wedding Part 11 - the first dance

When your song isn't a romantic type and your favourite songs are mainly within the boy band genre, it can be pretty ruddy difficult to find the perfect first dance song for your wedding day.

We spent hours, upon hours, going through our music collections and iTunes to find the perfect song for us. We were looking for something that we could dance to and get people involved in. But nothing felt right.

'Our' song. The song that will always make me smile at the memories of when we first got together - remembering spending hours getting ready to meet up, then spending an evening drinking together - is by the Courteeners. Lively without any meaningful lyrics. After lots of going back and forth, we realised it's not about the lyrics or the type of song, it's about what the song means to you. So whatever your song - go for it!

The Story of Our Wedding Part 10 - the reception

A few days before the wedding we found out the reception we booked was no longer available. Pretty big deal, but actually I remained calm and we just got on with finding an alternative. Wasn't easy to do and the venue we went ended up with couldn't have been more perfect.

The Balcony, Tsilivi. Beautiful location, food and great people. All the decorations worked brilliantly, probably even better than they would have at the previous venue.

My fabulous team of decorators set everything up the morning of the wedding, and they did a perfect job. Thank you Clare, Nicky, Dad, Sam, Lin, Gus and Rob. You all did a fantastic job.

The entrance was flagged with our wedding invites (see here for post on the Wedding Tea Towel).

We lined the path to the outside area with windmills and lanterns - they looked fantastic in the evening.

Children's table had lots of activities to keep them all amused. It worked!

We had a photo booth area, with lots of fancy dress items, blow up instruments et al. And we made these lips and moustache sticks which everyone had on their tables for photos.

We had a lot of fun!

The food was delicious, although I hardly ate anything yet again. There was a Greek Meze to start with and then loads of BBQ'd meat, ending with Baklava. I dread to think how much food was wasted.

The evening reception is all a bit of a blur. I remember being proud as punch and so emotional over my husbands speech. His words and the sentiment captured everything I love so much about our relationship and rounded up the day, and the whole reason everyone was there, perfectly.

Neither of us were even a little bit drunk. We ended up staying up until 3am, after getting back to our hotel with a small group of friends and my parents and brother. We drank lots of champagne and cocktails throughout the day, but we were so in the moment it had little effect.

Everyone had so much fun and it was so lovely to see my very best friends mixing with my family and enjoying themselves. It was the most perfect day and I wouldn't change a thing.

Our Wedding Rings

I loved my engagement ring, it's perfect, it's very me and it's very sparkly (especially under the spotlights in my bathroom!) but little did I know what a problem it would cause when it came to choosing the wedding band.

Because of the shape (see below) all the 'ready made' wedding bands didn't sit right under it. They looked wonky and felt uncomfortable. So, we had to have a ring specially made.

The Story of Our Wedding Part 9 - Marrying my Best Friend

As I walked up to my husband-to-be, all I could think was how happy I was. This is such a special photo, two of my favourite, most loved men on the happiest day of my life.

I just couldn't stop smiling. The ceremony was short and sweet. We got straight to it. The words were beautiful. And the view all around us was just perfect.

My lovely friend Clare did a reading. She recited one of my all time favourite 80s love ballads 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us'. It added to the ceremony and also added a bit of our personalities too!

And then we were pronounced husband and wife! Yay!

After the ceremony, we had the chance to see all our guests, we had some drinks then we went off and had our photos taken. We were determined to take in every second. So we took things slowly and really did enjoy every moment.

That's when the celebrations really began. xx

The Story of Our Wedding Part 8 - The ceremony venue

Our wedding ceremony was held on Cameo Island in Zante, Greece. Read these original posts to find out more about choosing our venues: here, here, and here.

We went for a few simple decorations as we felt the venue was beautiful all by itself.

We had bunting down the stairs, by Bunting Queen.

Pashmina's on the deck chairs - which doubled up as gifts for all the ladies. My Nan bought us these from a market stall in Spain.

And we had some tall lanterns leading the way down the aisle.

Guests were greeted with a fruity cocktail on arrival. They were very nice. We also had canapes, which we servied immediately after the ceremony. We had a variety of Greek dishes - I can't tell you what they were like as I didn't manage to have any. But the guests seemed to enjoy them!

The Story of Our Wedding Part 7 - Ready to Go

You'll remember from my 'I cry a river over... everything' post that I was really worried about my emotions on our wedding day. I cry over everything and so I thought it was inevitable that I'd be an emotional wreck with lots of tears on the big day. The reality... I was the calmest I've ever been. We didn't have any sentimental moments while we were getting ready. I just focused on having fun and enjoying it. The whole day is sentimental and momentous so I'd specifically asked not to have any 'talks' before we left or when we arrived. We're a close family anyway, so we all knew how important the day was to all of us and the excitement and fun was just perfect. What it meant was, I arrived feeling excited and so completely happy. I had a pep-talk with the little bridesmaids as we arrived so they knew exactly what they were doing. We had 'happy faces' photos taken to get them all excited and ready to make their grand entrances and off we went.

After good luck kisses, we were ready to go.

While all that was going on at the top of the island, here's what it looked like on the ground.

The song I chose for our entrance was Colbie Caillat, I do. It had a nice up-tempo vibe and the words were so perfect for us. I worked out who would walk down for each part of the song:

I was happy to say that our love wouldn't last,

Followed by the first of my two little bridesmaids, then the second two, then Shelly.

And then, for the final verse, it was me and my Dad. It worked out perfectly, after stopping for some photos on the way down I met my husband-to-be as the song ended with 'I love you' - now that was just luck, I can't take credit - but I was so chuffed! xx

The Story of Our Wedding Part 6 - My Husband to be

We made the decision to spend the night before the wedding apart. So H2B stayed with his family and I stayed in our hotel. It wasn't because of tradition, more because we wanted a 'last supper' with our families, and to add to the excitement on the morning. It was all very emotional.

The morning of the wedding, H2B was on the decorating team, which left me to enjoy getting ready. When Dad got back I had a little delivery - a gorgeous necklace from a local jewellery store in Worcester. Rock Lobster. I love my husband, he's so lovely and thoughtful. It was a perfect touch to a perfect morning.

I also had a little surprise for him. I had a special button hole made for him by Debbie at DC Bouquets to go with my brooch bouquet.

He looked so handsome. xx

Glad I didn't see him doing this before the wedding - I just hope they cleaned the slide before he sat on it! xx

The Story of Our Wedding Part 5 - the Bridesmaids

I had four little bridesmaids and my sister-in-law as my maid of honour.

I wanted to have some fun with the little ones. So I got them some very special tutus made from a lovely lady called Jane. (read my previous posts about the tutus here and here)

A girl needs her accessories - so each little BM had funky sunglasses for the Greek sunshine and DIY wands, made by my Mum from little garden windmills and coloured ribbon. They also had a cream, silk flower corsage each.

To add to the fun factor they each had sparkly trainers. They were only £7 from Tesco! Bargain and the girls loved them.

Mum did their hair too. We did cute little buns and added a cream, silk flower. I got those from Primark - they were only a couple of ££.

Girls being girls they all wanted some lip gloss, so MOH Shelly got to work.

For Shelly, I went for a Two-Birds multi-way dress, with simple jewellery and some very pretty flip flops from River Island. To add a bit of sparkle to Shelly's outfit, I got her a brooch from Accessories and she was also the lucky recipient of a Chez Bec sparkly piece of gorgeousness.

The Story of Our Wedding Part 4 - Sparkly Pretty Things - my wedding jewellery

At the end of January Mum and I spent a lovely weekend in Tunbridge Wells. The reason for our visit was to meet the super talented and gorgeous Rebecca from Chez Bec - we went along to Rebecca's beautiful studio and tried on some of her beautiful designs.

I tried on a selection of necklaces, bracelets and headbands. The choice was amazing. I ended up choosing the Emma Vintage Bridal Headband and I had a bespoke necklace made inspired by 'this' and 'this' - both items were absolutely beautiful but after trying everything on with my dress I actually changed my mind on the necklace. It looked gorgeous, but all together it all felt too bridal for me. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but my dress was really plain, so I needed to up the anti with the jewellery and I really wanted to make sure that everything I wore on the day reflected my tastes and my style. I'm not much of a jewellery wearer, but when I do it's always big and chunky costume jewellery. So I went back to the drawing board to find an alternative necklace. That's when I went to Butler and Wilson and found 'the one' - as soon as I saw it in the shop, I knew it was exactly what I had been looking for all along. A big, chunky, sparkly necklace. Completely over the top - so me!

I didn't wear any earrings or a braclet. With my sparkly necklace and bouquet, I decided I had enough bling to make statement!

The Story of Our Wedding Part 3 - My Outfit

For those that have seen my first post about my dress 'hello dress', you'll know that I found my dress pretty much straight away. It was as everyone said it would be - I knew as soon as I tried it on that it was 'the one' so I didn't mess around. The dress I went for was by designer Suzanne Neville, from her 2010 collection, Honour.

The dress was quite plain so I could go all out with the accessories. (Which I'll talk about in the next post)

The shoes weren't as easy to find as the dress. I have written many posts (this one, this one, this one, this one) about trying to find my perfect wedding shoes. Luckily for me the amazing Young British Designers came to my rescue and supplied me with these beautiful Sophie Gittins. (read all about that story here)

I absolutely loved my shoes. Real Italian leather - you just can't go wrong!

Do you like the magician look? I had white gloves for everyone who was touching my dress. Paranoid? Nah!

Mum had the task of doing up my dress. There's a knack to doing it up apparently so every time I tried the dress on at the shop she came along and had a practice.

Once the dress was on there was no bending down, so it was all hands on deck to put the shoes on and set the petty-coat etc. BTW how funky does my dress look as a short?! Maybe I won't sell it after all? For info on Mum's outfit go here. She got her fascinator from Marks and Spencer in the end. Bargain!

The Story of Our Wedding Part 2 - Getting Ready

I woke early on the day of our wedding feeling... absolutely, completely relaxed, happy and not in anyway nervous. I was so excited to get on with the day. I had a chilled out morning, a long shower and lots of preparation for the afternoon.

The day before we'd prepped the decorations for the reception and my Dad, brother and friends, Nicky and Clare (and Clare's husband Rob), went with H2B, and his Mum to decorate the reception. I'd actually planned on doing it myself - being the control freak I am - but Clare took control of the situation and encouraged me to hand over the reins. I'm so glad I did. It meant I could take my time getting ready with my Mum and sister-in-law without having to worry about anything.

I really thought I'd be an emotional wreck on the day. So it was a complete surprise to feel totally at ease about everything.

The night before I set out all my make up, jewellery, accessories etc, in the order I'd be using them in. It was yet another thing that helped keep things calm while getting ready:

My attractive underwear and the white gloves I made everyone wear when touching my wedding dress!

Make up and make up brushes - I did most of my make up myself, but I got my sister-in-law to do my eyes. She's a beauty therapist and make up artist and she's great at doing eyes. I like the way I do my base, foundation, blusher etc so I wanted to do that myself, but I'm not very adventurous with my eyes so I left that to the expert.

Base: dermalogica intensive moisturiser, dermalogica intensive eye repair, Laura Mercier Primer, By Terry high lighter, Rimmel Instant Tan.
Foundation: MAC
Blusher: Benefit Coralista and Dalas Bronzer
Powder: MAC transparent finishing powder - prep and prime
Eyes: MAC eyeshadow in 'Handwritten' and 'Samoa Silk', liquid eye liner with Rimmel black eyeliner on the bottom lids.

I had eyelash extensions done in the UK. I was going to wear false lashes on the day. But after trialling a few in the lead up I just thought it would be one less thing to worry about. I loved the eyelash extensions. They added length and thickness and it meant I didn't have to worry about wearing mascara for our entire 2-week holiday. I will be getting them done for every holiday!

My Hair
My amazing Mum did my hair. She's great at putting hair up so I knew she'd be brilliant. My friend and hairdresser, who couldn't come to the wedding as she has just had a baby, taught her how to do it. We had a couple of practices but hardly any. We gave ourselves plenty of time to do it on the morning of the wedding to make room for any mis-haps, but I'm happy to report it went up on the first go - clever Mummy!

We used hair extensions for the fish tail plait to add some bulk. My hair is really long, but when you start plaiting it, it takes some of the length and also the thickness out. The extensions just added some volume and kept the length to it.

I'm not really one for putting my hair up, so I didn't want it fully up, and I didn't want a pretty, traditional look. I wanted something completely different for me, but still modern and still relaxed. (read my Wedding Hair post to find out where I got my inspiration from)

Nails
Because I got married abroad, I spent a lot of time trialling different nail products. I was worried about chipping my nail varnish on the morning of the wedding or breaking a nail while on holiday. In the end I stuck to what I know and used my Barry M Shocking Pink for both my toes and finger nails.

The Story of Our Wedding Part 1 - The Day Before

We spent the day before the wedding getting things ready. Luckily we had a lot of family and friends with us, and some willing helpers, which made things so much easier:

We started the day by hanging the ribbon at our reception venue. The venue was set up on a hill over looking Tsilivi, where we were all staying. The light wind made it the perfect spot for the ribbons I wanted hanging from trees.

After a delicious lunch H2B and I went our separate ways. He went off to the hotel where his family were staying (Tsilivi Beach hotel). And I stayed at our hotel (Le Sante Spa) Did I mention they had upgraded us? Yes, to the honeymoon suite no less!

It was quite emotional leaving each other. Knowing the next time we would see / speak to each other would be the day we became husband and wife.

I then spent the afternoon at our hotel with two of my gorgeous friends, my Mum and sister-in-law, drinking champagne and basically chilling out. I felt absolutely fine the day before the wedding. Everyone had their jobs to do for the day itself and all that was left was to enjoy the moment - and the peace and quiet while the boys watched football.

I can't rate our hotel and their staff highly enough. As soon as we arrived they made us feel incredibly special, then we had the upgrade and on the night before the wedding they arranged for us to have a private dining area and a selection of Greek dishes served to us by our own waiting staff. It was magnificent - the perfect way to spend the night before our wedding day. xx

Our Wedding Story

6 Months after the big event, I've finally had the chance to write up the story of our wedding. Rather than putting it all into one long post with just the finished images, I've gone through step by step the details of our day. From the preparations the day before, all the way through to the reception. There's quite a few posts which I hope will be helpful for brides planning their day, and not too boring!

MY Hen Party

At the beginning of our engagement, I was adamant that I wasn't having a hen night. I didn't want to put pressure on my friends to have to commit to more expense for our wedding. Plus I automatically assumed I would organise it and I didn't want any extra stress in the lead up to the wedding. But my lovely friends wouldn't have it and they organised me the best hen night I could've wished for.

I didn't know anything about it until we got there. Something I'd requested because I'm a total control freak and I knew I'd poke my nose in where it definitely wasn't needed. 12 of my gorgeous friends headed up to Manchester on Saturday 23rd April (a month before our actual wedding day), we met up in the hotel bar, before heading to the first activity of the day! And here's what we did:

We arrived in taxis at a huge 'house' in Manchester. Even walking through the door I couldn't work out what we were doing. Then I found out we were at an actual recording studio - where Take That and One Direction had been recording earlier that week, I was stepping the same steps as Gary Barlow! OMAG - and we were recording my all time favourite song, Footloose, by Kenny Loggins.

We went through to the recording studio, which had one of those actual sound proof booths, musical instruments and all the technology that goes with it. The girls had arranged for lunch and champagne and everyone bought with them 80s clothing - tutus, leg warmers, sweat bands etc - we were fluro crazy!

It was so much fun, and the results were hilarious. After a few glasses of champagne I even threw in a bit of impromptu 'rapping' to my current favourite - Jessie J. (don't worry Jessie, your job's still very safe!)

After we'd recorded our song, we went upstairs to a photography studio where we had a photo shoot using 80s props. It was loads of fun. Here are some of the pics:

Sorry for the poor quality. The only down side to the day, was the cost of the images. They wanted a stupid amount of money for them, so I've only got the screen grabs as a momento of the day.

After falling out the studio, literally, we headed back to the hotel to get ready for a night out. Dressed in lots of glitz. We went for dinner, where we played some games and I was donned with pink hen paraphenalia. Then we headed, slightly worse for wear, to Lucky Voice. My lovely friends had set up the booth with all my favourite karaoke tunes and I hogged the mic for most of the night. I had lots of fun:

I had exactly the kind of hen party I wanted, thanks to my amazing friends Nicky and Grace. I love being silly, messing around, singing karaoke and posing for the camera. They got it spot on and I was absolutely over the moon with my hen night. Thank you to all my girls who came and made it so memerable: Mum, Shelly, Kim, Frew, Jo, Jen, Jayne, Caroline, Kirsty, Nicky and Helena. And a huge thanks to Gracie who couldn't join us because she was heavily pregnant at the time.

The next morning, whilst nursing our hang overs with a fry up, I was presented with a memory book. It was filled in by all of my hens, and some that couldn't make it, with pictures and memories. I will treasure it forever. xx

Rock the Frock Part 3 - Shoot 2 Colour Popping Fun

I absolutely love these pictures. Chris came up with the idea of making it look like we were behind the scenes of a music video shoot. I asked Elbie for big, crazy hair and bright make up and that is exactly what I got.

We had so much fun - I want to get married all over again just to be able to work with Chris, Dani and Elbie again!

Rock the Frock Part 1 - the ideas

I organised my Rock the Frock shoot to take place the week after we got back from Greece. Mainly because I wanted to still have our newly wed / honeymoon glow, ahem... tan!

I've been following the work of photographers Chris and Dani Barber for a while. Their photos are fresh, fun, funky and beautiful - no matter the occasion they just seem to get it and always capture the personalities and emotions of the people they're shooting. So obvs I booked them! And they most certainly didn't disappoint. They were an absolute pleasure to work with - from the booking, through to the ideas discussions, and the shoot itself - I have had a blast working with 'The Barbers' and would recommend them to everyone.

The Barbers

Because this was the last time I would wear my dress, I also booked a make up artist and hairdresser to really make the most of it! I chose Elbie van Eeden - Elbie has worked with the Barbers before (on the wedding of one of the girls from Twitter) and is also very well known throughout the wedding industry. She really does have magic fingers. And again was an absolute pleasure to work with. Elbie's recently gone full time as a freelance hair and make up artist and travels all over the country. Her prices are amazing, especially considering the extent of her portfolio, and she's such a lovely person. I would definitely have Elbie do my hair and make up for all my special occasions.

Once everyone was booked and the date was in the diary, we set to work on coming up with ideas for the shoot. I wanted two different 'looks'. So I sent over some ideas to Chris, Dani and Elbie to show them the styles I wanted to create:

Look 1 - surreal romance:

For the first shoot, I wanted to involve my new husband in some of the pics so we had a couple of shots of the two of us in addition to the 'wedding day' ones. I wanted it to be fun, but for this shoot I wanted a romantic, ethereal, almost fantasy-like shoot. This is the mood board Chris and Dani created:

Look 2 - colour pop:

For the second shoot, I wanted to go all out and show the colourful side of my personality. I wanted wacky hair, vivid make up and props - lots of props! I'm a big fan of the 80s, I'm loud and silly and I wanted this shoot to reflect that. The images I sent over for inspiration:

My bank holiday weekend was wedding-tastic. On Friday we went to the wedding of one of my best friends and her lovely man in Malvern. Frew and Phil got married at a beautiful little church with the stunning Malvern Hills in full view, we then headed to the lovely Cotford Hotel for the reception. (Congratultions Frew and Phil - my original post about their engagement) The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were fantastic.

They started planning their wedding 10 months ago. After a number of 'mind changes' they went with a fuschia pink and platinum colour-scheme. Frew wore a gorgeous off-white dress, with a sweet-heart neckline and a delicate floral print on the bodice. The boys wore full wedding-suits and each had a fuschia pink gerbera's. And Frewbie also had gerbera's in her bouquet, which looked something like this:

They had a charicaturist who spent the afternoon drawing all their guests. It was such a great idea - it got people talking, gave us all something to laugh at and something to take home. We're going to frame ours. (you find a list of charicaturists here)

It was so lovely seeing to of our greatest friends on their wedding day.

Then Sunday we attended the evening reception of our family friends son - Chris and Lauren - at Ardencote Manor in Warwickshire. We all grew up together, I was maid of honour for his sister 5 years ago and my brother was best man on Sunday. My Mum and Chris' Mum are best buds and we've all known each other for nearly 25 years. So it was lovely to spend the evening with lots of old friends. They also had a fuschia pink colour theme. And a fantastic band who played an array of songs that everyone loved.

A lovely weekend spent with my husband and family and close friends - a perfect bank holiday! xx

Products I can't live without - Part 7

On my quest to find my perfect wedding day make up I tried out lots of primers. I'll be honest, I didn't really find one that I felt made a huge difference. Then a friend recommend MAC Prep and Prime Transparent Finishing Powder £17.50 from MAC.

I absolutely love it. I can get quite dry skin if I use too much of a powdery base, but this is so light it hardly feels like you've got anything on and it sets your foundation etc really nicely. Reducing shine and keeping your make up in place for hours. I won't be attending a special occasion without it! xx

Backyard Weddings

For those who saw my post on The Any Campaign you'll know that my absolute dream wedding would have been in my parents back garden. So when I heard about Backyard Weddings, a company who bring your wedding day (apart from the legal bits of course!) to your back garden, I couldn't wait to get it up on the blog for you. I'm going to hand over to Carolyn, who's behind the idea:

Tell us about yourself

I'm Carolyn Bavister, wife to Duncan, who has to put up with my constant demands, and mummy to 4 gorgeous children aged from 2 to 16. My Company, Danby Castle Events, is based at our home of Danby Castle and we are a licensed wedding venue.

How did Backyard Weddings begin?

At Danby Castle we limit the number of weddings we hold as it is our home and the castle is a scheduled ancient monument so we like to give it some rest. I wanted the opportunity to hold more weddings - as I am rather addicted to them now! As another venue would be difficult to find, I thought why not take our ‘Vintage Tea Party’ Package and put it wherever the brides and grooms want it to be and so 'Backyard Weddings' was born in February 2011. We then spoke to One Life Ceremonies who have come up with the full ceremony package so you can get married in your back garden. This is not the legal marriage, so you still need to formally complete this at a registry office.

How does it work?

We take a marquee, furniture and the vintage tea party package, which includes all the food and décor out to gardens, orchards, fields etc. We can also exclusively reveal that we are now able to offer a range of other menus such as:

Hog Roast
Hot Buffet
Cold Buffet

This is so new we haven’t even worked out any packages as yet but these menus range from £30.00 (inc vat) per person.

My Mission - complete!

I'm a Mrs! That's right, after all the talking about it we finally got married on Monday 23rd May 2011 in beautiful Zante and I can honestly say it was the most perfect day of my entire life. Everything went brilliantly and everyone had a great time. I couldn't be happier.
I'll be writing a full report once I've got all my pictures, and I'll fill you in on all the details that made our day the day we hoped it would be.

Mission Complete?

My mission2wed might well be complete but, for many of you, it's only just begun. So, I've decided to make it my new mission to share my experiences and advice with you. :) As well as filling you in on all the details from our day, I'll be hunting down all the new products, services and news from the wedding world to make sure you can find everything you need to have your special day, your own way.

A big bug bear of mine when I first started planning our wedding day was that everyone presumes you'll have the same structure / items etc as all the other weddings they've been to in the past. But what I want to do is share the alternative options, as well as the parts you know and love, so you have the choice.

I hope it'll be something you're interested in, and something that will help you create your ideal day. If there are any specific elements you want me to cover, please let me know. xx

My Entrance Song

As you might remember from the 'I Cry a River Over... Everything' post I had a nightmare trying to find a song for my entrance. I really didn't want anything too soppy or serious, because that's just not us. And I also didn't want anything that would make me cry (any more than I'm already going to!)

I watched an episode of Glee, when they had a Bruno Mars theme. It was the episode when Finn and Kurt's parents got married. They did a version of Bruno Mars' 'Marry You' which is a lovely song, really jolly and upbeat. But there were a few lyrics that didn't really fit with walking down the aisle to get married. Like - 'if you wake up and you wanna break up that's fine!' It's really not fine! So I changed my mind about that. Instead, I've decided to have that as the background music, while we're signing the register etc.

I then considered the Greek Zorba Which I thought would be hilarious. But it gets a bit too speedy! Speed + stairs + heels does not a good idea make!

Then, in the queue at H&M, I heard a gorgeous song and used the 'Shazam' app to find out what it was. It was by Colbie Caillat and called 'I Do' the lyrics are so cute. It reminds me of our relationship very early on and even brought back memories of when we 'dated' at school. But it's not too soppy that it'll make me too emotional!

Keeping our guests excited

A few weeks before we all flew out to Greece, we sent out a post card to each of our guests. The post card, in the colours of our invitations, featured Greek phrases, with a note from us saying 'Here are a few Greek phrases to help you during your holiday. We can't wait to see you.

We wanted to build on the excitement and remind our guests that we're thinking of them. It's been great getting messages back in Greek! xx

2 weeks to go

I can't quite believe it's only two weeks until our wedding day. 18 months of research, decisions, organising, more research, saving, more decisions, more research, more saving and final decisions, are all finally coming to an end. I sit here and rifle through the pages of notes I've made throughout our journey - scribbled out ideas, re-written lists, jobs ticked off, pages of websites, cost comparisons, contact details - all down to the last few items. The decorations are packed and weighed, holiday wardrobe folded and ready to be packed, suncream and toiletries purchased, suitcases ready to be filled and now the beauty regime is in full force.

Of course there have been some wobbly moments - times when I (not 'we' as the H2B has been incredibly laid back the whole way through) have been worried we've made the wrong decisions, panicked that I wouldn't find the details I wanted, stressed that things wouldn't be ready in time and all the hard work would have been wasted. But what I've learnt the most is how important it is to involve your family and friends, and not to be so hasty in making decisions:

The things that have gone wrong, have done so because I had made decisions in haste, without thinking about the alternatives and the bigger picture. From the moment you get engaged all you think about is getting to the day and ticking off that huge to do list manifesting in your head. It's enevitable that you'll make a few mistakes along the way. And it doesn't matter how many times someone tells you this, you're going to do it anyway because I was told, by friends and people on twitter, and it didn't stop me rushing into things.

All I would say, to those who are having an engagement of 18months or more, is this:

Savoir the moment you get engaged. Enjoy the party atmosphere, the well wishes and the dream world of planning in your head. But leave it at that. Give yourself at least a month of drinking champagne, going for dinner with family and friends, and having plenty of QT with your new fiance. Because that moment only happens once, and although you have so much to look forward to, it's important that you don't push this moment aside. It's the beginning of the rest of your lives as husband and wife - relish in it!

Then, start thinking abou the kind of wedding you both want. Discuss budgets with your family, if they're helping, and look at your financial situation. Then work out guest numbers. That's when you will be in the best position to start venue shopping, and so on.

When you come to making a decision on any part of your wedding, don't just settle for the first, or even second, thing you see. Go away, think about it, discuss it with your fiance, family and friends, weigh up your options - and then sleep on it. It's so easy to rush into making a decision, especially when you have the pressure of availability and budgets on your mind, but don't. Really and truly, you do have more time than you think. Unless you have always dreamed of a particular venue, photographer, band, DJ or date, you have got so many options to look into. Check them out first. Afterall, there's no rush. You're getting married and the longer you leave it, the more time you have to save for those extra special items.

I'm just two weeks away, and all that is left to do is to pack our bags, pick up my dress and jump on a plane. I'm sure I'll have another wobble or two before we get there but, at the moment anyway, I'm just excited about the thought of marrying my man, my best friend and starting the beginning of our lives together as husband and wife. xx

Bloomin Lovely - bouquet idea

For those that have seen 'my bouquet' you'll know that I opted not to have a flower bouquet. I've never really been one for flowers and when we chose to get married abroad, I decided straight away not to even think about flowers. I just didn't see the point of spending £hundreds on something that neither of us were that interested in - instead I had a beautiful brooch bouquet made by Sarah at Tiny Gems.

Sarah's collection of Heirloom bouquets are just beautiful. And you can make it personal by adding your own brooches to the bouquet, like I did. It gives you a lasting memory from your day that you can hand down to the next generation.

Sarah has since launched a new bouquet, Jacqueline little ray of funshine, the latest in her collection and I just had to share it with you. I think it's absolutely gorgeous and perfect for brides who don't necessarily want a sparkly bouquet but still want something to keep. An especially perfect option for an outdoor wedding!

Isn't it pretty?! Here's what Sarah has to say:

This bouquet was made for a photo shoot at Danby Castle as requested by Danby and Fine and Funky events, the brief was they were having an ice cream palor, hook a duck, and a real fun fair feel to the day. I made the bouquet with lots and lots (I lost count) of plastic flower buttons, and popped in some ice cream cones, ducks and even a really cute bumble bee. I couldn't decide what collar to do for the bouquet and remade it many times, but I still wasn't happy with it. Then I had a lightbulb moment and got a huge sunflower and used that as the collar. It looks really effective and picks out the little sunflower buttons in the bouquet.

I then had to think of a name for it and it could only be "Jacqueline little ray of funshine" after Jacqueline from Marry Me in Tuscany as she is a little ray of funshine, based in Siena :o)

The price of this bouquet will be £200 and includes insured postage and packaging.

A hot air balloon wedding

The Any Campaign - where would you choose?

If I could be married anytime anywhere... I would get married in my parents back garden. The family home I grew up in (and even shared a cheeky snog with my H2B when we were teens!) which has so many fabulous memories. I would have spent our budget on making the garden into our very own wedding ceremony venue. It would have been perfect. But of course in the UK we can't just get married anywhere. Well not yet anyway!

Penny from Tino&Pip Photography has launched a campaign to try and change the laws in the UK, which could see future brides and grooms being able to marry in their very own special place.

Here's what Penny has to say:

Hi there! I’m Penny, from duo wedding photographers Tino&Pip Photography. We are always on the hunt for fabulous wedding inspiration and love to share our favourite wedding blog treasures. After all, we all secretly daydream about our big day; well I certainly love to let my imagination run away with me…

Surrounded by woodland and a blanket of bluebells, my guests await my arrival, seated on beautiful mismatched painted chairs, adorned with ivory paper flowers. From a few of the closest trees hang huge vintage mirrors in ornate frames, bouncing the golden hour light around us. Ivory petals lay out my path, lifted occasionally by a gentle breeze. Heads turn as I float up the aisle in a backless ivory silk dress with many tiny paper flowers in my hair to match my teardrop bouquet…

My dreams were shattered however when I discovered that open air weddings are not permitted in this country. The law states that a marriage ceremony venue must have a roof, be moored to its foundations, and licensed by the local registrar. There are thousands of gorgeous licensed wedding venues in the country, offering stunning scenery and experienced wedding coordinators to help you plan your special day, and many would love to offer their own beautiful grounds for outdoor ceremonies, especially as they can hold the reception too, and also offer inside space in case the typical English weather rears its head! We live in a beautiful country with breathtaking beaches, ruined castles, parks, mountains and woodland. Why not celebrate this and incorporate these spectacular landscapes into our wedding ceremonies? Perhaps you would like to be married in a venue that it sentimental you, such as your back garden or the home you grew up in. We are teased by photographs from many of these fabulously unique ceremonies on wedding blogs such as Rock ‘n Roll Bride and Wedding Chicks, as in many countries including Ireland and Scotland, it is the registrar that holds the license not the venue- a system far more suited to modern times.

Further restricting our imaginations when it comes to our wedding day, is a highly outdated law that says that weddings must take place between 8am and 6pm. This rule was drawn up when civil marriages were first introduced in 1837 and it was designed to stop people marrying the wrong partner in the dark in the days before electricity! So my dream of being married in golden hour light (just before sunset) was also quashed.

We have discovered however, that there was a Government White Paper in 2002 proposing to relax these laws, but it was put on the backburner before anything came of it. In 2005 a ‘consultation document’ was published proposing such modernisations, but as yet no timetable has been announced. The Any Campaign therefore requests your help in bringing this matter back into consideration so that we can all have the wedding of our dreams!

We need at least 1000 British signatures to present our petition to the government, but we would also love to get you thinking about what this law change would mean to you. We’d really like to feature your ideas on the blog, so if you dream of an outdoor wedding then please tell us about it, and send any images you may have of that ideal place, coz we love pretty pictures!

I can't even begin to imagine how Kate Middleton is feeling today. I'm nervous enough having to walk down a small set of stairs in front of 70 of our very nearest and dearest family and friends, let alone walking down a huge aisle in front of hundreds (if not thousands?) of people, plus the pressure of millions of people viewing your wedding day on their TV's! I have no doubt she'll look like the princess she's about to become and I hope that William is giving her plenty of support, but the pressure is sure to be there.

The thing I've been thinking most about is how restricted they are. Apparently they've been heavily involved in the preparation, but let's face it there's really only so much they'll be able to control. There are traditions they have to stick to and then there's the security aspect. I'd like to think that parts of the day will be untraditional and unique and show their personalities, but I doubt it very much.

I have to admit I'm incredibly excited about it all. It's fantastic for the country and it's lovely to have good news all over the media rather than the usual sadness that we hear so much about. But what I'm most excited about is the dress! Maybe because I'm about to be a bride myself, or just because it's 'the dress', whatever the reason, I can't stop thinking about it. Especially if she really has designed it herself. What a momento of your day (of course the mugs and flags come a close second!). I'm imagining a vintage lace, long, elegant, flowing number. Something that shows off her creative, modern and fashionable personality and gorgeous figure, but keeps her lady like elegance - without being too covered up or traditional!

Roll on tomorrow, when we'll finally get to see what she wears. And just for the fun of it, here's a few examples of what I don't think she'll be wearing!

The countdown...

And so, the time has come to say goodbye to the monthly countdown, and hello to the weekly countdown! Yes, that's right, 1 month today will be MY wedding day! Right about now on Monday 23rd May 2011, I'll be in Greece in full swing of preparations for our big day.

I've never felt such excitement. I've been excited the whole way through, but now, now that we're on the weekly countdown and it's literally around the corner, I AM BURSTING!

We have done everything we need to and all we have left is a few bits n bobs that are just 'nice to haves'. The only big thing we still need to do is to post some of the decorations over to Greece. I need to get a shimmy on with that. We've left it quite late to arrange, so I just hope it'll all be fine. If not, I'll just have to pay for extra luggage and take everything over on the plane. It's only a few bits anyway. Otherwise, I'm happy with everything we've done and the preparations, so all that's left is...

I had a bit of a 'mare' getting my wedding ring. My engagement ring is square, so the usual 'ready-made' rings didn't fit right underneath it. Caterpillar Dreams - flower girls

As with my bridesmaid dress, I didn't want the standard pretty dress for my flower girls either. (read this post to find out more)

As with many aspects of the day, I put out a tweet to find someone who makes tutu's. And that's when I came across Jane from Caterpillar Dreams. I know I've already talked about the designs. But I just wanted to shout about Jane and her amazing creations just one more time.

Jane has been an utter pleasure to work with. Her attention to detail, enthusiasm and professional approach is second to none. She makes you feel instant reassurance from the very first correspondence, and it continues throughout the process. First of all, you tell Jane what you're looking for. Colours, ages of your girls etc. Then she comes up with full designs for each of them and a quote. Which you receive in the post, wrapped in pretty pink tissue paper with a tailored postcard and your quote. Everything is spelt out in a 'shopping list' so you can match it to your budget.

Once you provide measurements and confirm your order, Jane gets on with the design. And then a month or so later you receive your package. All beautifully packed up, yet again. Even the under skirts that come with the long tutu's are really pretty.

Thank you Jane. You really are terrific!

Bridesmaid Dress

After buying a bridesmaid dress at the beginning of our engagement and then changing my mind, I'm happy to say we've now got a bridesmaid dress and it has arrived. Although, it wasn't that straight forward!

Leaving out the part that I'd actually bought a bridesmaid dress and changed my mind (read the post here if you're interested), it took me ages to find a dress that worked with the style of the rest of the wedding.

I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of actual 'bridesmaid' dresses. They look beautiful, in the right wedding, but it's not what I wanted for our day. So I scoured the high street stores in a bid to find the right one. That's when I came across TwoBirds Bridesmaid, after seeing a photo of a wedding that a colleague had been to. It's one dress than can be warn 15 different ways - perfect!

So, I booked us an appointment at the London store. And I can safely say it was perfect. Of course that was until I was informed that it takes about 3 months to order and receive from the USA! Fine, if you're at the star of your planning and you have over 3months left, but I only had 2 months until the wedding. Of course they can do a 'rush' order, but by the time you've paid for the 'rush' job and delivery charges you're looking at over £300 for a £240 dress! Plus it was still pushing it to get here on time. And so that was that, or so I thought!

That's when Anna (aka Anna and the ring) came to my rescue. She had the exact dress, in the right size and colour, for her bridesmaids. So I bought it from her and it arrived safely last week. Phew!

It looks really gorgeous on my BM. Now I just need to get the shoes to go with it. We're thinking some sparkly flip flops. xx

Blood Donation Day

When Emma from 'The Wedding Reporter' and Fiona from 'Fiona Kelly Wedding Photography' asked me to support their Blood Donation Day I was straight onto the post.

I hold my hands up to not giving blood for the first 28 years of my life. It's not because I didn't want to, I've always had a huge fear of giving blood. After spending a week in hospital when I was younger (nothing serious btw) and having to have a blood test every day, the thought of having blood taken sent me into a tizz. When I have to have a blood test at the doctors I can't sleep the night before and, up until very recently, I always had to go with my Mum! (I know, I know, but seriously it's bad!)

Anyway, cutting a long story short. A close family member had to go into hospital and needed blood. And it wasn't until I really thought about all those people that need blood every day and the lives it saves, that I realised that I needed to get over myself and donate blood. So in November last year I booked myself an appointment. I didn't tell anyone about it, because I was so worried I would wimp out at the last minute. But low and behold I only went and bloody did it and boy am I glad I did.

What I'm trying to say is, if a wimp like me can do it then anyone, physically able to, can do it.

I've just received my letter to book my next appointment. I've got my next appointment on Monday 18th April in Worcester at the Methodist Chruch Hall. If you're in Worcester why not get your appointment booked now and by Tuesday it'll all be over!

BLOOD DONATION DAY

Some people already donate blood. However, those who don’t tend to fall into two categories: too squeamish or too forgetful. Both reasons are totally understandable, conquering a phobia of needles or blood is a huge thing to ask, as is scheduling the time for a regular appointment to donate.

It is an astonishing fact that only 4% of the population provides donations of blood for the rest of us. That’s a lot to expect of so few people. Especially when this is one of those times when you really can have a massive impact on the lives of others, by doing something so simple.

So, why are we campaigning for this? Many of us have been affected first-hand by the importance of having a ready supply of blood, and realise how very different life could be without it. Just stop for a minute and think what might happen if you couldn’t get the blood transfusion that you take for granted will be there. This is the perfect forum to bring it to the forefront of people’s minds, especially those who have been contemplating donating blood but just haven’t got round to doing it yet.

If you’re physically able to give blood do please try to make time, it can literally make you a lifesaver. We would love it if donating blood became a regular habit for you, something that is done on a monthly basis without giving it a second thought. If you can’t donate then please continue this campaign by asking all those you know who can to make an appointment – ask them to do it now… today, not when they get round to it.

Do read this blog and the associated posts from all of those involved in this campaign. There will be some very personal stories that we hope may open your eyes to how important blood donors are and how you never know when you may be the recipient of the blood that these wonderful people give.

One Saturday way back in January I received a Tweet that outdoes every other tweet I have ever seen. It was from the very fantastic Debra at Young British Designers who very kindly suggested I choose a pair of shoes from their spring/summer collection as my wedding shoes - as a gift! I know! I was, and still am, so astounded by their generosity and kindness. I couldn't believe my luck.

So on Friday 1st April I went along to their studio in Leomington Spa to pick up my very own pair of shoe-art by Sophie Gittins.

About Sophie

'Sophie is a British shoe designer who set her youthful sights on a career in shoe design before studying at the prestigious Cordwainers, London College of Fashion where she graduated with First Class Honours. She went on to impress a host of top industry names and was selected as a finalist of Fashion Fringe Shoes by a judging panel including luminaries Manolo Blahnik, Colin McDowell and Rupert Sanderson.

'Spurred on by this achievement Sophie Gittins set to work on launching her eponymous label at only 25 years of age. I couldn't agree more! Sophie's shoes really are a piece of art work. The pair I have the great honour of calling 'my own' are as light as a feather, and even smell beautiful! (no really, they do!) When I went to see Debra she said that while they're being made, Sophie puts them on during the process to ensure the balance is just right. Well it certainly works. They're so unbelievably comfortable. I honestly can't wait to put them on, on my wedding morning - and wear them forever after! :) So, without further ado, I present to you.. the beautiful... magnificent.. awe inspiring... MY actual wedding shoes!

I know! They are stunning aren't they. I am the luckiest girl in the world and will always be so very thankful to Debra and Young British Designers for their generosity. I honestly can't thank them enough!

I'm at the stage in the wedding planning process, where I'm starting to look at 'honeymoon' outfits. In my case, our entire wedding is one big honeymoon. But we'll be joined by family and friends, so I'm going to need some cover ups!

I was sent information from the PR office of 'Have Faith' swimwear. Great Expectations

On Saturday I went to try on my actual wedding dress. I was so excited. I'd been to pick up my beautiful shoes the day before (which needs a whole post to itself!) and with expectations high I took them, along with my jewellery, bouquet and make up on, to my dress fitting so I could see the final look. The only part I couldn't do, was my hair.

I took along one of my bessie friends who can't make the wedding because she's having a wee one the same week! I could hardly sleep the night before. I was so excited about seeing it all together.

The lovely, lovely ladies at Dragonfly Contemporary Designs in Cheltenham welcomed me into the dressing room, as I showed them all my beautiful accessories. I stepped into my gorgeous dress, donned the shoes, accessories, picked up the bouquet and stepped out to see myself in the full length mirror...

Nothing!

I looked in the mirror and expected to burst into tears of joy at the reflection that starred back at me...

Nothing!

Instead, I nearly burst into tears for fear (wasn't that a band?) of feeling this disappointment on my wedding day. Even after reassurance from my friend and the bridal shop, I just couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right.

Because I've been so excited about trying the dress on for the first time, I expected to feel some reassuring butterflies that matched the first time I tried the dress on. The ones that tell you, you've made the right decision. Instead all I felt was disappointment that I didn't look the best I've EVER looked.

The realism is that I have the most ridiculous expectations of how I should look on the day, and I'm just setting myself up for disappointment. Honestly? I don't know what I expected; to turn into Jennifer Anniston or Megan Fox? Maybe! But certainly more than I saw on the day.

I adore all the individual components, so I'm not entirely sure what I don't like about it. My head was a total mush of questioning.

So onto Ye Olde Faithful Twitteratti for guidance.

I'm very lucky to have built up some great friendships on Twitter. (It might sound strange to some people to have any kind of 'friendship' with people I only know through the internet, but these are people who have been with me the entire planning process and who are always there to help when I've been stuck at a hurdle. People I am so eternally grateful for.) And so I sent a sneaky photo to three of the girls I've been in touch with for the longest to ask for their opinion. Emma (aka @cloggins), Abbie (aka @tattybojangles) and Laura (aka @purpleandpearls):

All three got married towards the end of last year and all three came back to say the ensemble looked fine and that they too had the same fears and lack of confidence when they tried on their dresses for the first time. Now, I've seen all three of their wedding day photos and they all looked amazing on their wedding days, so that has certainly put my mind at rest.

I'm still, of course, questioning myself. In fact I'm questioning far more than just what I'm wearing, but I'll save that for another post. But I definitely feel better now I know it's a normal thing to feel and next time I go in I'll be sure to lower those expectations and save them for the actual day!

Anyone who has been involved in organising a hen party, you'll know how difficult it is to find something different that your bride hasn't done on all the other hen parties she's been to before. Thankfully, there's a growing number of 'alternative' hen party ideas out there. You might have seen my 'Tea Party' post in February and the 'Vintage Hen House' shoot I was involved in a few weeks ago. Another idea I've come across is a 'DIY' hen party. Where you get your girls together to make 'stuff'. I recently received information from Lauren Westwood, director of handmade gemstone jewellery company, Westwood Rocks. Kate and Tom - a beautiful wedding on a budget!

I've been very lucky to 'meet' lots of other B2B's thanks to the wonderful world of Twitter. One of which is Kate (aka @twinkle2323). Kate got married at the end of 2010 and what I loved the most about Kate's wedding is how savvy she was at finding bargains.

It's an area that I really struggle with. I've not found any bargains in my wedding planning journey. Mainly because I'm lazy, but also because I wouldn't have thought for a second to look at some of the places Kate has. So, without further ado, may I introduce to you the wedding of Kate and Tom:

Over to the lovely Kate...

'We got married on 27th December 2010 and I can honestly say it was the best day of my life. I married my best friend and that is one heck of an achievement! Sitting down to write a report for the ever so lovely Gemma has been an interesting experience as I can’t actually believe that my little day is anywhere near blog worthy so it knocked me for 6 to be asked!

'When you start planning a wedding there are so many blogs and links and trends that it becomes very easy to get obsessed with and I was as guilty of this as the next bride. I think the key thing to remember is that when it comes down to it, it doesn’t actually matter if you don’t have a huge budget, the accessories from a hot designer and perfectly kitsch details. What matters is finding things that you love and suit you and your husband. Anything else is just room dressing!'

The Budget

'Our wedding was put together on a teeny budget of around £6,000 with over 2 thirds of that going on the venue and photographer. Hopefully you can see that budget doesn’t need to mean boring or shabby – I like to call it inventiveness! This isn’t a traditional wedding report with a walk through of the day and the details but more a way of information sharing for other brides in a similar situation to myself.'

The Details

To get engaged at all was a totally unexpected, but delightful surprise. Tom has been married before and has 2 fantastic kids so was very anti re marriage. Something must have changed his mind however as he proposed at home 2 years to the day of the wedding which set in motion the whole winter wedding idea. The 27th December is my Grandparents wedding anniversary so it seemed really fitting to get married on the same date. Originally we talked about a Summer 2011 wedding but I am really glad we went for December as, although we had no hope of sunny pictures and several feet of snow, it was incredibly magical! Tom was a real driving force in organising the wedding and found loads of the main details including the venue, jeweller and cake. Without his organisational skills I do question if everything would have come together quite as well!'

The Vision

'I got asked endlessly about themes and visions for the day in the run up to the wedding and if I’m totally honest the only vision I had was “things Kate likes” which probably made things easier! We picked a vague green and silver colour scheme as it made it easier for decorating, stationary etc but really a lot of things were picked to fit with the venue and the dress, both of which were picked really early on.'

The Venue

'We chose our venue around 18 months before the wedding as it was pretty much love at first sight. The Granary Hotel in Kidderminster, was everything we wanted and more. It is set in lovely grounds and was perfect for my vision of everything happening in one place. This is something I really can’t recommend highly enough, especially if like us you have elderly relatives and people with small children to think about.

'The Granary were fantastic and really went out of their way to help us get things exactly how we wanted. They made the suggestion of a small ceremony and wedding breakfast followed by a much larger party in the evening which suited our needs perfectly and really helped out with the budget.

'They also provided us with contact details for the lovely Hayley of Banquet in Style who did all the decorations, table settings and seat covers. Hiring in someone to take care of all the details was amazing and I will never forget seeing the room laid out so perfectly based on many emails and calls backwards and forwards. Hayley also set out our NSPCC charity favours for us and other little details like the children’s goodie bags I put together to keep them busy and the little quiz question tins which were a huge hit during the meal.'

'At this point I think it’s worth mentioning the wedding date itself. We got married on a Monday, albeit Bank Holiday, and again this helped the budget enormously. This is definitely something I recommend looking into as I couldn’t believe the difference between weekend and weekday wedding prices.'

The Photographers

'Having the right photographer was right at the top of my wish list as I firmly believe that getting all the special moments captured adds to the whole experience and to us it was incredibly important to us both. I did loads and loads of research and very quickly found lots that I didn’t like! Lots of formal, posed and awkward pictures just weren’t for us.

'As part of my quest I stumbled across the blog from the Chris Barber Media website and instantly fell in love with what I saw. I sent an enquiry straight away and we went to meet up with Dani and Chris. I can’t emphasise enough how fab these two are – they listened to all my fears about being photographed and totally got the look we wanted. We booked up straight away and have never looked back! It is vitally important that you get on well with your photographers and one of the ingrained memories of our wedding day is giggling with Dani and Chris while watching Eastenders in the bridal suite – that’s just how we roll.

'We spent the 2nd largest chunk of the budget on the photography package but I don’t regret it for a second as we now have the most amazingly perfect set of images to treasure forever.'

The Boys

'Tom chose his son Josh and his brother to be his best men with his other brother as the usher and general mister fix it! They wore grey suits hired from Slaters with green and silver/grey waistcoats and ties. The fathers of the bride and groom also wore matching suits.'

The Girly details!

'I think I will be forever known as the girl with the Littlewoods wedding dress... It wasn’t a deliberate decision but I am really glad I stuck to my guns and went for the dress I loved. The ultimate bonus is that it cost less than £200 which helped the budget enormously!

'The best advice I can give when looking for a dress is to keep your eyes open to all possibilities and not be shaken by other people’s ideas of what makes the perfect dress. I saw my dress in the catalogue before we even got engaged and I loved it straight away. I did do the whole dress shop thing several times over but nothing seemed quite right so after a discussion with my lovely Mum we sent for ‘the catalogue dress’ which was even more beautiful in the flesh and fitted perfectly with no adjustments. It must have been destiny!

'My accessories were a mix of high street bargains and ebay finds. Again, having a good search around and not being obsessed with the latest name of label can save a fortune but most importantly get the look that you are aiming for. My fur shrug was a Debenhams sale bargain but I couldn’t have asked for better for the 1950’s film star look I went for. All my jewellery came from accessorize but I have had so many compliments on it.

'I am very lucky to have a sister who is amazing at hair and makeup so she did all the beauty work on the day. How she got through a bride, 2 bridesmaids and 2 mums I will never know but she did and I am eternally grateful as I wasn’t at all keen on having a makeup artist that I didn’t know well. We did a bit makeup shopping blitz and tried out lots of products before putting together a final kit suitable for my super pale complexion which is not very easy! Most of the makeup as from Too-faced and Urban Decay and I would really recommend the fixing spritz from Urban Decay which meant that my makeup even withstood a snow storm! My sister also created my wedding hair using a hair vine from ebay, bun doughnut from Boots, a few clip in extensions and lots of hair spray! Lots of trials are the key to getting the exact look you want and having my sister to do this was fab as we could tweak things as much as we wanted to.'

The Bridesmaids

'I had 2 adult bridesmaids and one mini one! My sister Jenny and my best friend Beks were the obvious choice for the job and were a great help with the preparations and on the day. My Stepdaughter Megan was a real show stealer in her TK Maxx dress and BHS fur shrug to match mine. Her accessories also came from BHS and are now key items in her dressing up box! We also got her a pretty party dress for the evening and again this is something I would recommend for little ones as it took the stress out of keeping her clean!'

'The quest for adult dresses was a long one with 2 girls with totally different body shapes and complexions but again Littlewoods saved the day! My bridesmaids wore dresses from the Holly Willoughby collection which were just right for a winter wedding with little sleeves and lovely empire line styling. They wore feather hair accessories from New Look and chose their own shoes. I also gave both girls a “Be Lucky” string necklace as a present the night before the wedding which they both chose to wear on the day.'

The Flowers

'We decided very early on that due to the date of the wedding real flowers would not have been a great option. My bouquet, the bridesmaids flowers and button holes came from a brilliant online company called Silk Blooms and were so realistic that no one believed they were artificial! The added bonus is that everyone could keep their flowers as a little gift from us. We also got Megan a flower wand from Sarah’s Flowers which survived the excitement of a 4 year old and is another favourite item in the dressing up box!

'Using artificial flowers sounds scary and I did agonise about it but actually it cost a fraction of the cost of using a florist and the flowers we had were stunning.'

The Cake

'Our cake was made for us by Emma van Tienen of Cakes by Emma. She made us a beautiful mistletoe themed cake with personalised toppers of Tom and I plus our 2 kids and cats! Visiting Emma to eat lots of cake samples and talk about details was one of my very favourite parts of the planning process. Smaller suppliers are fantastic at listening to the details you want and it is really lovely to benefit from the personal service that people like Emma provide. For all brides, on a budget or not, I really recommend searching around for local suppliers who often operate on a fraction of the cost of the bigger companies and organisations. I had considered doing the cake myself but it would have cost more and looked nowhere near as good as the masterpiece Emma created for us!'

Other details

'I became an ebay expert in the course of wedding planning! There are so many fantastic people on there who make amazing handmade items of the very highest quality. Our invitations, guest book and wedding post box were all sourced from ebay sellers along with the personalised wedding thank you post cards we sent out straight after the wedding. Check feedback, ask for testimonials if you are not sure but most importantly communicate with the people you are buying from and you can’t go far wrong really.'

Final thoughts

'Planning a wedding is extremely daunting and it is so easy to get caught up in the buzz and not actually get what you want. Planning a wedding on a tight, small budget is even harder but I hope I have shown that it can be done. The key is shopping around and keeping your eyes open to all possibilities.

'The other thing to remember is that you can’t plan for everything. Our wedding fell right in the middle of the worst snow we seen for years. All the run throughs had to be cancelled and some guests couldn’t make it but it was still our special day. I had never imagined that my pink ASDA wellies would feature quite so heavily in my wedding day but crunching through the snow wearing them holding hands with my new husband is a memory that will stay with us both forever and I wouldn’t change it for a second!'

I love Kate's attitude to planning a wedding and I think it shows that you don't need a big budget to have your perfect day.

I Cry a River Over... everything!

As we near the big day, I'm starting to think about how it's going to pan out. And the one thing that keeps playing on my mind is the lack of control I have over my emotions.

I cry at everything, and I mean everything! Whether I'm happy, sad, angry or just tired, when someone's horrible to be and when someone's nice to me - for all of those reasons, and more, the way I show my emotions is with a waterfall of tears pouring down my face. And I'm not even exagerating this time. Anyone who knows me knows I cry all the time. My Mum and my Dads Mum are both the same - so really I had no chance!

Now of course, there's no problem with crying on your wedding day, it's an emotional day it's bound to happen. But I'm not talking a few droplets of hollywood tears, this is a full blown, blotchy face, make up streaking, blubberthon! Everytime I think about it - getting ready with my Mum in the morning, putting on my beautiful dress, the shoes, the journey to the ceremony, seeing my H2B waiting for me to arrive, walking down the stairs arm in arm with my Dad, thinking about how much I wish my Grandad had stayed with us a few more months so he could be there, seeing my Nans and all the friends and family who have made so much effort to be there for us, the thought of starting our lives together as husband and wife, and everything else that comes with a wedding day - I cry.

Quite obviously, I don't want to be a blubbering wreck on my wedding day. But the only way I can stop myself from crying is if I don't think about any of it. Blank it all out and think about something else completely. Non-related, non-emotional thoughts like, 'I wonder what the weather will be like tomorrow', 'I wonder what the weather's like at home', 'I wonder what they're all talking about on Twitter', 'Jeez I hope I don't fall down the stairs', 'Oooh that's a pretty flower', and so on. But then I'll just be a zombie bride, going through the motions to get me through what should be moments that I cherish and remembered for the rest of my life. So I don't want to do that.

One thing I've already decided is that my entrance music has to be up beat. If I hear a soppy song as I start the walk down the stairs, that's it, I'm going to be off. I'll be trying to stop myself, but that will just make things worse, and what if I end up spluttering and snotty as I arrive to greet my H2B? OMG! So, I will choose something more upbeat and fun for the entrance. I have a few ideas - but I'll share them after the wedding!
I'm also going to be telling Mum and Dad not to say anything nice to me before we leave. We can have 'the moments' after the wedding, when I haven't got my make up on and there's no risk of foundation smudging on my Suzanne Neville!

Of course, I would like to point out that these would be tears of joy!
I want to laugh and enjoy the moment. But even when I laugh I know the emotions will get the better of me and then I'll be laughing and crying at the same time - resembling a crazy, hyena type woman!

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do. I was going through some brooches at the weekend to add to my bouquet. I wanted to include my Grandad's badge of honour from his fireman days and some more brooches from my Great Grandparents. All the memories from the beautiful jewellery left me a jibbering wreck, once again! This part is especially hard and emotional as Grandad only died last month and it was so sudden, we never imagined that he wouldn't be there. And he was so looking forward to it all. Although it's going to be a happy day for so many reasons, it's also going to be very sad that he won't be there to celebrate and dance with us. So let's just hope no one asks about my bouquet on the day. I think I'll just have to add a little tag to it and hold it up when someone asks. That way I don't have to talk about it. haha!

If anyone has any ideas about controlling emotions, please do let me know. I'm willing to try anything to get me through the day. And if anyone knows of any other wonder products that keep your make up waterproof, please also let me know. I'm trying all sorts in the lead up. I'm considering dipping my head in varnish at the moment! :) xx

Vintage Hen House

I am very excited to tell you about a fabulous new website that launched this week - Vintage Hen House

Abbie (aka @tattybojangles) is the brains behind the site (along with her tech savvy hubs @stenweb) and created the site to help brides arrange an alternative hen party to the usual 'L' plates and willies!

Here's what Abbie say's: "This idea came about after I planned my own vintage themed hen party (yes I planned my own hen party, control freak much) as I really didn’t want to do any of the traditional hen type things. To be honest I wasn’t really looking forward to my hen party, as the idea of L-Plates, pink feather boas and flashing hair bands filled me with dread."

So Abbie's created a site where vintage suppliers - from hairdressers and make up artists, to photographers, venues and clothing companies - provide information on their services so that brides (or bridesmaids!) have a one stop shop for all their vintage hen party requirements!

To launch the site, Abbie, with the help of fabulous photographer Lee Allen and gorgeous make up artist Emily Jayne, organised a photo shoot to show brides what fun they can have on a vintage hen shoot. And, as I was one of the lucky wedding bloggers she chose to be part of the shoot, I can certainly vouch for the fun factor. Wanna see some pics? OK then...

This time in TWO months will be my wedding day! MY wedding day! I'll hopefully be waking up to a beautifully sunny day in Greece, with a hearty breakfast and lots of smiley faces, ready to start the day.

This weekend we're going to get a few of the final fiddly bits done and get some of the final detail bought / decided on. Then we've just got to pay for the rings and my dress (plus a few other things) and we're done! DONE, DONE! Woo hoo! (touch wood, fingers crossed and all that!)

HOW TO: Photo Booth Props

I'm always seeing pictures in magazines that I think 'wow I'd love to do that for our wedding' But they never seem to share the 'HOW TO' part. So I thought I'd start some 'HOW TO' posts, where I'll go through the step-by-step process of how we created some of the 'home made' elements of our day.

First off, photo booth props

As you might remember from this previous post we're having a photo booth area at our wedding reception. It's not quite the 'unusual' idea it was when we first got engaged, I think every wedding I've seen lately has had some sort of prop, fancy dress or photo booth, but I still love the idea and it's so fitting for our group of family and friends. So, as well as the fancy dress items, my OH has been busy making props. We started with the classic moustache:

And here's how you make it...

The Tools: Thick card, scissors, glue, sticks and coloured felt.

Take a thick piece of card and draw on the shape you want to create.

Then cut it out to use it as your template on the felt.

Place card on felt and draw around it until the felt is full.

Cut out each shape.

Repeat the process for other shapes / other coloured felt.

Stick the shaped felt to the wooden stick with glue. We used a glue gun, but it was a bit stringy so there might be something better. Top tip: Place the stick at an angle so your guests can hold it without it covering their face!

Cover the back of the shape with more glue, then place a second side over it, to secure it onto the stick

And there you have it. Moustaches on sticks. Suits you sir!

You can make all sorts of shapes to put on the sticks. We're also making red lips and some other shapes, but you could do glasses, beards, noses, masks - whatever takes your fancy!

London Baby!

I'm feeling pretty excited today. Tonight I'm jumping on a train and heading to the big smoke with my Mum, SIL and her Mum. We're going for a girlie weekend to hopefully get the bridesmaid dress, MOB outfit, a few accessories for me, and generally have some fun. Here's the plan:

We're staying at Myhotel Bloomsbury

On Saturday morning we're heading over to TwoBirds Bridesmaids in Notting Hill, to try on their 15 ways dress for Shelly.

Then we'll be shopping for the MOB outfit. No doubt Harrods, Harvey Nicholls, Libertys and Selfridges will be visited - so she doesn't run the risk of wearing something someone else is wearing!

And in the evening we're meeting up with one of my oldest and dearest friends, heading for an early dinner then we're all going to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical at The Palace Theatre - I am SO excited about seeing this. I have loved the film for so many years and I absolutely can't wait to see the musical.

My Wish List

I'm sure we've all done it - created that 'if money were no option' wedding gift list. Well, I thought I'd share a few things that I found the other day, that would most definitely be on that list! :)

First of all, no luxury wedding gift list would be complete without champagne. My favourite is Veuve Clicquot so this 'made to measure' cruise collection would be top of the list. A whopping $80,000 it includes 4 bottles of La Grande Dame 98, 2 magnums of La Grande Dame 88, 6 champagne flutes Riedel and 6 water tumblers, plates, table mats and cutlery.

I'm not greedy, so I'll settle for this Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Rose gift set for £202!

My OH and I loved watching Australian Masterchef, but to even come close to creating their dishes you've got to have the right kit - I'm thinking this Kenwood Food Mixer (around £500) would be a good start!

The H2B loves a good coffee and I am partial to a latte. For coffee at home it has to be Nespresso and these crystal coffee machines are the ultimate! £2,000 each - I think I'd also have to put a penthouse apartment on the list to accommodate!

Afternoon Tea

So, my current favourite thing is a bridal shower! I love the idea. Especially great for anyone who doesn't really want a hen party a bridal shower gives you the opportunity to celebrate in a more 'low key' way. But don't let that fool you into thinking it's not as special. I've seen some amazing bridal shower's in the blog world. One of my favourite ideas is to take your very closest ladies for a tea party! So I spoke to Sam, from the Tea Party in London, to tell us about her fabulous venue!

We've got the men's outfits! Woo hoo!

We didn't want a formal look, but wanted something relatively smart still (i.e no flip flops!) because my dress isn't exactly your typical beach style wedding dress!

We found some lovely light grey trousers and pink mix shirts from Marks and Spencers' Autograph collection which are absolutely perfect. With that we'll be getting each of the boys (H2B, both Dads and all three brothers) matching shoes and belts. These are the shoes, and the belts will match the colour.

My Bouquet

I decided long ago that I didn't want any flowers at the wedding. With the wedding taking place in Greece I felt that we'd be spending a lot of money on flowers that would inevitably end up dying before we could get them home. So I started thinking about other options for things I could carry. That's when I came across brooch bouquets. I talked about it in a previous post (click here to read) and now I have great pleasure in introducing my very own Heirloom Bouquet, from the ever so talented Sarah at Tiny Gems.

With the bouquet, I wanted to make sure it was something I could hand down to the next generation of brides (if they want it of course!) so Sarah incorporated a selection of brooches and jewellery from our grandparents - which makes it even more special. What do you think?

Outdoor Decorations

At our reception venue, we've got a line of tree's that sit nicely between the grassy 'reception' area where we'll be eating and the seafront. To decorate the tree's I've bought a selection of ribbon in zesty orange, fuschia pink and lime green and I'll be hanging 2m strands from the low branches. I'm hoping in the wind, they'll make a nice effect in the background. Looking something like this:

I'm also lucky enough to work with a company that supplies gardening products to garden centres around the UK, including solar lighting - they have very kindly given me a selection of solar lanterns to hang around the venue.

These chinese solar lights are from Revolution and can be found in Garden Centre's around the UK. They're only £6.99 each - so they're ideal for decorating an outdoor venue. Say Zankyou to the flexible gift list service

I don't know about you, but when we first started planning our wedding and looked at gift lists, I found it difficult to find one that offered everything we needed. We moved into our own home nearly two years ago and have most things we need, so the standard gift lists weren't going to work. On top of that, we decided to get married abroad. Automatically, you feel you shouldn't even create a gift list when you're already asking people to spend so much money and time to come to your wedding. However, we've had so many people asking what we want as a gift, and literally not taking no for an answer, we needed to find something that would work for us.

We're planning on taking our honeymoon on our first anniversary, so we'll be saving for that, and there are a few things we'd like for the home too. What we needed was a way that anyone wanting to contribute could, whilst getting over the hurdle of the awkward asking for cash!

As you might know, I am a big twitter addict - finding most of my fab suppliers on Twitter - and that's where I had Zankyou recommended to me. Admittedly by the PR agency that represent the company, but I wouldn't put anything on here if I didn't honestly recommend it. It's exactly what we needed. It works as a wedding website, where you can put all your wedding details, get guests to RSVP or post messages, as well as monitor guests lists etc. AND, their gift list service lets you add whatever gift you fancy. They offer a list of Zankyou suggestions, which you can go through and 'add' to your list, or you can add your own suggestions. Anything from contributions to your honeymoon through to cutlery, gadgets, artwork, bed sheets - anything you want really. Rather than your guests buying 'items' the money gets transfered into your selected bank account, where you can then buy the gifts yourself. The best bit of course being, it's completely free to set up and run. Bonus!

Of course you need to spend a bit of time setting it up to make the most of it. Creating your gift and guest list and then you have to send a form to Zankyou with details of the account you want the money to go into. They don't ask for actual bank details though, just the IBAN number you find on your bank statement to be able to transfer the money your guests give you. Which I felt happier about.

I think it's a great idea and works really well for couples who don't want to ask for cash, but ultimately get the cash in their chosen bank account - so everyone's happy!

DIY Bride

I've recently been speaking to the lovely Kate on Twitter (aka @EmbNutrition). Kate's getting married on Sunday 10th April at Woodlands Park Hotel in Surrey, and the clever lady has made her own invites and favours. I wanted to show you what Kate's created so you can see what can be done in your own home...

'We've got a theme of hearts, and the colour is mainly aubergine with some yellow incorporated because it's spring.'

With just under two months to go Kate's sorted all the clothing, flowers, honeymoons, wedding rings, shoes, hair and make-up.

'It's mostly the details left to do - finish making favour boxes, the wedding newspaper, the table name cards, place cards, finalising decorations, accessories for me, transport arrangements, music, finalise the ceremony, finish making fun things to do at the reception, have the hen and stag weekend (this weekend!). Oh my gosh I just realised that is quite a list - eeeeeeek!!!

'I've really enjoyed making all the stationery myself, I think it has saved me a lot of money and it's nice to get positive feedback from people after all my hard work. It has also helped me to remember how much I love being creative. I'm also enjoying spending time with close friends as we organise the day.'

I really love what Kate's created. I think she's done a great job and both the invites and favours could easily be shop bought.

"People are forever saying to me "you have plenty of time", but I recommend getting organised as early as you can to save a last minute panic. A Bag Full of Love

You may remember for our wedding invite we gave our guests something a bit different. (click on the link to see our actual invite - which I still gush over by the way) Well now the very clever people behind the Wedding Tea Towel have created a new and innovative way of sending a message to your guests with their fabulous Canvas Love Bags. I spoke to Karen from Wedding Tea Towels about where the idea came from, here's what she had to say...

In the final days of our wedding planning we totted everything up and it turned out we'd underspent (if you can call it that). This meant we had a little bit of money in the budget to do something really special for our guests. We wanted to give something back to them to thank them for coming.

After going to a few weddings ourselves that year, and having a few bad heads in the morning, we thought a kind of 'Hangover Cure' might be a cool idea to give to everyone as they left.
